With the growing obesity epidemic in the U.S. among child-bearing women, an increasing number of infants are born to mothers with obesity or diabetes. Additionally, the percentage of preterm infants (< 37 weeks of gestation) remains high in the U.S. (12%), and the care of these compromised neonates is both challenging and expensive. Available evidence shows that nutrition in the neonatal period has a long-term impact on the survival and growth of infants (particularly preterm infants and infants born to mothers with diabetes or obesity), as well as their health and well-being in adulthood. To meet the needs of dietitians, health care professionals, researchers, and students to learn more about this important area of nutrition, the 2013 Texas Human Nutrition Conference (THNC) is focusing on “Infant Nutrition and Health”. Expert pediatricians and scientists from around the country and Canada will speak on the many aspects of nutritional support of preterm and term infants, as well as infants born to mothers who are obese and/or have gestational diabetes. Amino acids, carbohydrates, polyunsaturated fatty acids, probiotics, and milk-born bioactive proteins will be among the nutrients discussed at the THNC. Conference attendees will learn practical means to provide human infants with optimal nutritional support so as to improve their survival, growth, development, and long-term health and well-being.
