Nutritional Science Graduate Association

The Nutritional Science Graduate Association (NSGA) was founded in the fall of 2009 and became a University recognized organization in December 2009. The purpose and goal of the Nutritional Sciences Graduate Association is to promote student interest, interaction, and networking opportunities among nutritional science graduate students through educational, social, and community outreach events. The organization was founded to increase interaction of nutritional science graduate students with each other, the IFN, the university, and the community. Membership is open to any graduate student pursuing a degree in Nutrition or with interest in a nutritional-science related field.
In the first semester of our organization, we had invited speakers come to lecture about topics related to nutrition and health. We also had meetings to discuss cares and concerns about our program and education. Our organization hosted a picnic for the faculty and students of the Intercollegiate Faculty of Nutrition. We also competed in and won the First Annual Nutrition and Food Science Kickball Tournament.

In Spring  2010, we organized the Intercollegiate Faculty of Nutrition Research Symposium. The purpose of the symposium is to allow students who are attending national meetings to practice their presentations or to allow students to share their research to the faculty and fellow students. We had four students compete in the oral competition and seven students compete in the poster competition. Jason McKnight of Dr. Guoyao Wu’s lab placed first in the Oral Competition. Second place was a tie between Gabriela Angel-Morales of Dr. Mertens-Talcott’s lab and Xilong Li of Dr. Guoyao Wu’s lab. In the poster competition, Harmony Turk of Dr. Robert Chapkin’s lab placed first. Second place went to Qian Jia of Dr. Robert Chapkin’s lab. Third place was awarded to Camilo Pohlenz under Dr. Delbert Gatlin and Dr. Alex Buentello. Many more students participated by organizing and attending the event.

Our organization has held many social events for students to become better acquainted. We have also participated in Science Night at local elementary schools to teach young students about various aspects of science.
Our hope is that our organization begins to grow and expand. We intend to provide current and future graduate students with the support they need to be successful and productive.
